It's primary drug target is 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A receptor HTR1A and it's secondary target is Sodium-dependent serotonin transporter SLC6A4.

Remission rate for sertraline use to treat depression may be influenced by variants in the ABCB1 gene, in particular, rs2235040 and rs9282564. Some studies suggest that carriers of the minor allele at this SNPs may have have more rapid and complete remission than patients with the more common (major homozygote) genotypes.
