The ADIPOQ gene on chromosome 3 encodes adiponection (APN), a 30kDa glycoprotein composed of 244 amino acids. Sometimes known in literature as the "guardian angel cytokine", adiponection may play a key role in the pathogenesis of obesity-associated cancers along with other diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, and in general, having higher levels of adiponectin are a good thing compared to lower levels.
Polymorphisms in the ADIPOQ gene may influence cancer risk. A 2016 review [PMID 27144066
] of these associations includes:
- wrt breast cancer
- wrt prostate cancer
