The protein encoded by the CYP2B6 gene is the primary metabolizer of a number of drug substrates, such as bupropion, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide, pethidine, efavirenz, nevirapine, ketamine and propofol. [PMID 17073575]
SNPs in CYP2B6 may thus influence the efficacy of such drugs. For example, the effectiveness of bupropion, a commonly used smoking cessation drug, has been reported to vary depending on CYP2B6 genotype.
Mirtazapine concentration is affected by CYP2B6, which could be associated with efficacy [PMID 22926595].
Note that there are over 100 CYP2B6 SNPs known, with numerous complex haplotypes and distinct ethnic frequencies, making CYP2B6 one of the most polymorphic cytochrome p450 genes in humans. [PMID 17638512]
