DAOA (D-amino acid oxidase activator, G72) encodes a protein which is thought to interact with D-amino oxidase (DAO), a protein that degrades D-amino acids. As one of DAOs target molecules is D-serine, an native activator of NMDA receptors, DAOA may have an effect on NMDA-based neurotransmission.
[PMID 18023149] meta-analysis of prior schizophrenia (4304 cases, 5243 controls, and 1384 families) and bipolar disorder (1145 cases, 1829 controls, and 174 families) studies, M18/rs947267(C) (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.62-0.83) and M22/rs778293(A) (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.72–0.91) showed association with schizophrenia in Asians, M24/rs1421292(T) (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01–1.24) showed association with schizophrenia in Europeans, no single marker showed association with bipolar disorder
