Y chromosome paternal ancestry associated with many individuals whose roots lie in the counties of Northwest Ireland, Ulster and Lowland Scotland. The relatively high frequency of this specific subclade among the population of certain counties in northwestern Ireland may be due to positive social selection, as it is suggested to have been the Y-chromosome haplogroup of the Uí Néill dynastic kindred of ancient Ireland. The name of this paternal haplogroup does not appear to be stable. The ISOGG 2009 tree listed it as R1b1b2a1a2f2 (and is the match reported by 23andMe's Paternal Haplogroup finder). The ISOGG 2011 tree renamed it to R1b1a2a1a1b4b. And now the ISOGG 2012 tree renamed it yet again to R1b1a2a1a1b3a1a1. Older revisions had other names including R1b1b2a1b6b and R1b1c7. This may be a source of confusion (and frustration) for those looking for more information on this haplotype.
