Promethease/Desktop

From SNPedia

This is now abandonware. There are too many issues with Orientation which have been improved in the web based version, but are not addressed in this old Desktop build. It's still of some use to see which Pubmed articles are relevant to your SNPs, but too many of the genotypes will be flipped and it can no longer be considered reliable.

The earliest versions of Promethease ran on a Windows desktop computer. In time it was supported on Mac and Linux. As tablets became more popular it was necessary to offer a web based version at https://promethease.com. This is now the primary way to run the program, it's easy to keep it continuously updated, and to roll back features when something new doesn't quite work. Over the years it's become increasingly difficult to support every version of Windows, Mac and Linux, and to deal with firewalls, antivirus apps, and the other differences on each machine. The GUI version only supports the slow free runs which take approximately 16 hours to run. The ubuntu version can also be run with --cmdline --help and will offer a command line interface and will even accept payments for the faster run and interactive reports. These cost $9 which is considerably more than the $5 of the web based https://promethease.com to encourage you to use that instead.

In the past there was also a Mac version as well, with luck maybe there will be again. However Promethease version 0.1.161 (and all earlier versions), were unaware of Orientation, and began to produce some wrong conclusions for snps on the minus strand. Version 0.1.164 was bitten by https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Raw_query_continue

Notes:

  • On a Fedora 22 the executable fails with a core dump after I click 'Next' on the first dialog (see below). However it works after running /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders-64 > /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache (with an extra -64 at the end) as suggested by the error message.
