Along with the Androgen Receptor (AR), increasing expression of this gene increases the risk of breast cancer while reducing the risk of prostate cancer and vice versa. 10.1038/onc.2011.144
The New York Times reports that mutations in the PTEN gene may cause both tuberous sclerosis and autism. Clinical trials are under way to determine whether the same drugs can be used to treat both conditions.
